Summary:
The CHIROMAR project meets the requirements of the field Basic sciences (11) but also those of the field Enhanced disease prevention and better use of medicines (1.3.3), since a deep knowledge about chirality as well as the elaboration of rapid methods for determination of enantiomeric excess and absolute configuration by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) will definitely improve the control of chiral drugs.

It is well known that most bioactive compounds are chiral and the biological activity of the two enantiomers may be quite different, although all the other physical properties (except rotation of the plane-polarized light) are identical in achiral media. For the modern pharmaceutical industry, the production of enantiopure drugs is a real challenge and, in this respect, measurement of enantiomeric purity and determination of absolute configuration of the final product and of the intermediates are very important targets.
The nuclear magnetic resonance method is a modern and rapid alternative in such stereochemical analyses.

The present project is aimed to elaborate new chiral auxiliaries for the determination of enantiomeric excess and to design procedures for determination of absolute configuration in original chiral synthons using NMR spectroscopic methods.
The proposal aims also to increase the awareness on the importance of configurational analysis in the development of bioactive compounds production as well as the opportunity of implementation of a post-graduate educational module on this topics.
