Summary:
SOLVSAFE is regarded as a European Small and Medium Enterprises innovation platform, aimed at generating and using cutting-edge scientific knowledge and methodologies in order to effect radical industrial process changes oriented to achieve the following objectives in four different sectors, including oil extraction, active pharmaceutical ingredients production, crop protection products, paints and varnishes:
* Reduction of the number and quantity of hazardous solvents utilised
* Reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions to the atmosphere
* Reduction of CO2 emissions
* Increase of the quantity of renewable materials utilised
* Reduction of the air concentrations of solvents below the Occupational Exposure Level (OEL). Research achievements in alternative safer solvents, water-based processes, and biotechnological breakthrough innovations will be applied to a wide variety of key industrial sectors.
SOLVSAFE is oriented to achieve the following environmental and safety goals:
1. 50-100% reduction in the number and quantity of hazardous solvents utilised;
2. 70% reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions to the atmosphere;
3. 60% decrease of CO2 emissions;
4. 40% increase in the quantity of renewable materials utilised;
5. reduce health risks in production sites decreasing the Occupational Exposure Level (OEL) to hazardous solvents
6. to reduce hazardous solvents in commercial products for human consumption .
SOLVSAFE will be applied to a wide variety of industrial processes resulting in breakthrough innovations in 5 different industrial sectors:
1. Manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs)
2. Production of biodiesel and utilisation of its by-products
3. Production of crop protection products
4. Varnishes and paints
5. manufacture of solvents.
