Summary:
The goal of TRANSCATUM project is to develop a procedure for the transesterification of triglycerides found in the composition of vegetal and animal fats by using short chain mono-hydroxyl alcohols under heterogeneous catalysis simultaneously with glycerol conversion, resulted as by product, in cyclic acetals, inferior ethers or esters. The mixture of inferior esters of fatty acids resulted by transesterification and the derivatives resulted from glycerol transformation form a diesel like biofuel.
The biodiesel fuel is non-toxic, fully biodegradable and results from renewable raw resources. In this respect, the use and production of biodiesel enroll in the sustainable development principles, reason for which a series of European Directives marked the biodiesel implementation as additive in classic fuels. Therefore, the use of biodiesel has governmental support in all industrial advanced countries.
